One of my favourite things about preparing for the imminent arrival of Jr is decorating his bedroom. Even though he won't be in it for a few months yet, I have this overwhelming urge to get it finished and pronto!

Who knows if the finished result will echo his personality as it develops in the years to come (although if his in-utero actions are anything to go by, a wriggly wild monster is not too far from reality) but lordy there are so many cool decorating ideas for kids rooms!

One of the best things is being able to purchase artwork online and print it off yourself locally, on the stock you want, to the size you want. I stumbled across this cute print by Olive & Birch on Etsy and am having it printed and framed as we speak. Our first child was nicknamed 'little peach' because her little round cheeks were so edible, and I'm sure number two will be no different!

If Superman sat for Picasso...

The very first piece of art I remember seeing and loving was Picasso's Woman with a Mandolin. I was primary school age, but loved flicking through the art almanacs at my Auntie and Uncle's house. Minoring in Art History at University only fueled by my love of early 20th century art, in particular Cubism and I often wish I could time-travel a-la Midnight in Paris and sit for Picasso. I would give up ice cream forever in exchange for a Cubist portrait. Possibly even ice cream AND cupcakes.

I love love love this modern comic-book-Cubist take by kiwi artist James Reid - he's even done Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and Danger Mouse (hello children of the early eighties) versions.

Hey James, what's your definition of superhero? A woman that can give up ice cream and cupcakes?

Fortune Favours the Brave print on Etsy

If you want anything really meaningful in life, something that will make a significant difference to your satisfaction and happiness, it generally means taking a leap of faith.


Without going into too many details yet (I'm brave, but not fearless!) I have taken two huge leaps of faith lately, and look forward to sharing the journey with you as they evolve, one way or another.

Saturday Scrapbook : Poems without words

I have a folder on my computer that is absolutely bursting with illustrations I wish I owned. Every now and then I manage to snag one, but most of the time I just stare and drool, and wish I could visit the Land of the Birthdays so I could learn how to draw too.


I love illustrations because they are easy to love. Unlike other art forms which require serious research and a huge leap of faith before investing, illustrations, especially in print runs, are accessible in every way.

In celebration of the humble tit

Seb Lester print from Keep Calm Gallery

Call me immature, but there are certain words that never fail to make me giggle like a school girl. When I saw this print on Keep Calm Gallery I was once again twelve years old and being sent out of human biology.

Apparently, the print is a 'celebration of the humble tit', artist Seb Lester's favourite variety of British garden bird (tee hee). I would love to hang this in my toilet - never again would we have a problem with performance anxiety!

Keep Calm Gallery is run by the lovely husband and wife pair, Hayley and Lucas, who I met while living in London and who kindly designed our wedding invitations. Their online gallery of quirky, whimsical prints is one of my favourite browsing pleasures and I love getting their email updates. I'm always guaranteed at least one chuckle and a covetous sigh.
